The subsistence farming families of Nepal are in the front line of Climate Change. The impacts are devastating. Landslides are more common and higher temperatures, erratic rainfall and lengthy drought causes vital crops to fail. In addition climate change has brought new insect pests that can have a catastrophic effect on the harvests. NRVT aims to offer practical aid to help farmers increase yield despite the unpredictable weather patterns. Water management systems are an essential. NRVT has teamed up with Sital Drip Irrigation to offer these simple, yet highly effective irrigation kits.

Imagine that you have a small plot of land on a mountain. On this plot of land you have a basic house and some bamboo shelters where you keep a couple of goats. You also have chickens. This land is all you have. On it you must grow enough food to feed yourself, your partner and your three children. You must also sell produce to pay school fees and to buy clothes. If you have a health problem then you must find money for this too. This is the reality for the farming families in Jaleshwari and for millions just like them in the remote mountains of Nepal.
Now climate change means that your crops do not grow as tall as before and your harvest will not last until the spring. You think about moving to Kathmandu to look for work but you know it is an over-crowded city and jobs are hard to find. You have no choice but to continue on the mountain hoping that a miracle will occur.
NRVT's drip irrigation project offers real hope to these subsistence farming families. Precious water can now be directed to the roots of the plants to mitigate the effects of drought and increase crop yield. In phase 1 of this project 80 families were offered the drip irrigation kit and the sprinkler kit. Eighty families now have the possibility of increasing their food yield and thus improving their nutrition and their income. NRVT aims to make more of these kits available to other families in Jaleshwari and the surrounding villages.
